Algernon Usry

Taylor Funeral Home of Gibson announces the death and funeral services of Mr. Algernon Usry, age 77 of Highway 88 West, Stapleton, Georgia who died Friday evening, May 12, 2017 at his residence.

 Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, May 16, 2017 in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Avera, with Rev. Doug Mays, Rev. Tommy Anderson and Rev. Steve Spencer officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot of Waldens United Methodist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Dewayne Walden, Reggie Walden, Timmy Usry, Steven Usry, Chad Metz, Kevin Jenkins, Shawn McTier, Michael Walden and Richard Usry. Honorary Pallbearers will be past & present members of The Southern Songmaster’s Quartet.

A native of Gibson, Mr. Usry was a son of the late Jesse and Inez Landrum Usry. He retired from Georgia Tennessee Mining Company after more than 40 years as a Foreman, and was most recently an Associate of Taylor Funeral Homes. Algie loved singing Gospel music and sang with the Southern Songmaster’s Quartet for many years. He was a member of Waldens United Methodist Church, where he had led music, and was attending Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where he was the music leader.

 Mr. Usry was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Linda Anderson and is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Sonya Rooks Usry of Stapleton; son, Keith Usry of Stapleton; daughters, Andrea Usry of Wrens and Rhonda and Bobby Smith of Wrens; grandson, Chandler Smith of Wrens; sisters, Edith Walden of Augusta, Wanda and Jack Sapp of Dublin, Lynne and Buddy Jenkins of Thomson; brothers, Kenneth and Sandra Usry of Wrens, Harold and Connie Usry of Sandersville and Garry Usry of Thomson; a special cousin, Sidney Usry of San Jose CA.; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

 The Usry family request, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Waldens United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, C/O Patricia Kitchens, 1304 Hadden Pond Road Avera, GA, 30803, or to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 230 East Ohio Street, Suite 500 Chicago, Illinois 60611.

 The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 PM Monday evening at the funeral home.
