Taylor Funeral Home of Waynesboro announces the death and funeral services of Dr. Byron Lamar Murray, Jr., age 84 of Burkeland Road, who died Tuesday, June 21, 2016 in the Burke Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, June 24, 2016 in the B. Lamar Murray Gym with Rev. Sam Wilder and Rev. Walter Dukes officiating. The family will be receiving visitors one hour before the service in the cafeteria of Edmund Burke Academy. Entombment will follow in the Burke Memorial Garden Mausoleum.  Pallbearers will be: James Eastmead, Dr. Frank Carter, Dr. Johnny Christian, George DeLoach, Jimmy Dixon, Dub Harper, Gary Glover, and Billy Mims. Honorary pallbearers will be: Dr. Bonnie Jenkins, Dr. Walter Voyles, Dr. Shelly Griffin, Dr. Harvey Sanders, Dr. Larry Jackson, Dr. Joe Jackson, Dr. Ben Bashinski, Board of Directors of Southern Bank, Board of Directors of Edmund Burke Academy, current and former employees of his medical practice.

A native of Sardis, Georgia, Dr. Murray was born on June 2, 1932 to Byron L. Murray, Sr. and Mary Bonnell Murray. He graduated from Sardis High School in 1948. He then attended Junior College of Augusta and went on to graduate from the University of Georgia in 1952. He then attended the Medical College of Georgia and graduated in 1956. He began his medical practice in 1957, and he has been practicing family medicine in Waynesboro, Georgia for the last fifty-nine years. Dr. Murray served on the medical staff of Burke Medical Center for over fifty years. He was a member of the Burke County Board of Health for fifty-two years, and served as its chairman for twenty-seven of those years. He was a founder of Edmund Burke Academy, served on the Board of Directors for many years, and was currently an emeritus member. He was also a director of Southern Bank where he served on the finance committee for many years and a member of the Burke County Development Authority-. Dr. Murray served as physician and medical review officer for Georgia Power, Southern Nuclear, and Southern Company at Plant Vogtle.

Dr. Murray is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Nell Murray Gacovsky and is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Carol Benson Murray. He leaves a legacy with his son, Byron Lamar Murray, III, his daughter, Karen Murray Rowland (Tommy), his son Stephen Benson Murray, Sr. (Jennifer), his son Brian Carroll Murray (Mary Gusta), and his nephew Daniel Alan Gelderman, Sr. (Deborah). He has six grandchildren, Thomas Ryan Rowland (Greer), Tyler Benson Rowland, Hallie Ann Murray, Mary-Lynn Bargeron Murray, Stephen Benson Murray, Jr., and Brian Roberts Murray. He has two great-grandchildren, Carolyn Jane Rowland and Catherine Ryan Rowland. He leaves behind his sister Marsha Greiner along with many great nieces and nephews.  Along with his family, he is survived by a special family friend and employee of more than 50 years, Patricia S. Odom.

The family would like to give a special thanks to all of the staff of Burke Medical Center and Dr. Bonnie Jenkins for the wonderful care he received.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in memory of Dr. Murray to Edmund Burke Academy, 345 GA Highway 56 S, Waynesboro, GA  30830.
