Donald E. Winslow

Taylor Funeral Home of Louisville announces the death and Donald Everett Winslow, Jr., age 76, beloved husband of Jo Ann Hayes Winslow, passed away Saturday, October 2, 2021, at his home in Aiken, SC.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, October 9, 2021, at St. Johns Methodist Church, Aiken, SC with Rev Butch Blackwell officiating.  Visitation with the family will be held following the service. The Aiken Senior Men's Club Board of Directors will be honorary pallbearers.

A graveside burial service will be held at the Louisville Cemetery in Louisville, GA at 4:00 pm on Saturday, October 9, 2021.

A Native of Rochester, New York, Don was the son of the late Donald E. Winslow, Sr. and the late Marjorie Stone Winslow. He graduated from Spencerport High School and The American College of Financial Services in Bryn Mawr, PA.  Don served four years in the Air Force to include a tour of duty in Turkey.

The YMCA was always close to Don's heart, and he was involved with many YMCA locations most of his adult life.  His association with the Y traveled with him as he moved around with his career.   He was very instrumental in bringing a YMCA to Aiken and worked diligently to help make it happen.  He was a Board member of the Augusta YMCA and a Metro Board member for several years. 

Don volunteered with many organizations in Aiken, to include the Julliard in Aiken, the Essential Tremor Group, the Aiken Department of Public Safety, to name a few.   In his earlier years Don was very involved with the Rochester New York Zoo, serving as their Vice President and also on the Board for the Seneca Zoo Society. 

Don was a man of many interests and hobbies.  Upon retiring from his Banking career in 1990, Don began making custom inlaid & hand carved carpeting, to include a rug for a Ryder Cup golf tournament at Oak Hill Country Club & one for a Harley Davidson location to mention only a few.  He also began making a line of walking sticks and canes which were sold in the Aiken area for several years.  Horses brought Don to Aiken in 1999 where he continued his participation in Carriage Driving for many years.  He enjoyed acting with the Aiken Playhouse, starring in several plays, to include Camelot, Inherit the Wind, Annie Get Your Gun, Twelve Angry Men, Twelfth Night and It's a Wonderful Life.  He also loved “anything trains” and volunteered at the Aiken Train Depot for many years.  He was always pleased to don his “Conductors Uniform” for many events such as parades, reading to children's groups, etc.  Don spent many years collecting train memorabilia.  During Don's later years, he began acquiring and selling “fancy cancels” postage stamps which he always said was just fun and not work. 

Don was a member of the Aiken Senior Men's Club for many years and served in many capacities to include, president, vice president, program chairman and a board member.  He was named Man of the year in 2015. 

Survivors include his wife, Jo Ann Hayes Winslow, daughter Jennifer Fisher (Matt), Melissa Winslow, Christina Valente (Chris) all of Rochester, NY.  Grandchildren Elizabeth (Libby) Bell, Alek Bell, Matthew Tongue, Megan Lomb (Brian) and Jeremy Valente.

Also his step children Elizabeth H. Stafford and Sean Hayes (Julie).  Step grandchildren Haley Stafford, Cassidy Stafford, Zachary Stafford, Laura Faith Hayes and Ethan Hayes.   He is also survived by a great granddaughter Cecelia Lomb.   Surviving siblings include a brother David Winslow of Waltham, Maine, sisters Sharon Ehrhardt of Rochester, New York and Linda Convery (Brian) of Kendall, New York.   Don is also survived by his beloved Jack Russell, Sophie.

His wife and family want to express their appreciation for the loving care Don received from Trinity Hospice of Aiken.
