Taylor Funeral Home of Gibson announces the death and funeral services of Mr. Verlon Downs, age 73, of Gibson who died Wednesday evening at his residence.
Funeral service will be held 11 am Saturday, June 18, in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Avera with Rev. Mark Bowers and Rev. David Severance officiating. Pallbearers will be Brad Usry, Gary Haynes, Russell Clark, Mark Thigpen, Chris Brooks, Robert Jones, Gary Kitchens, and Jason Mathis. Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
Mr. Downs was native of Gibson, Georgia and a son of Henry Gibson Downs and Audrey Faye Sheppard Downs. Verlon served the National Guard for 6 years and graduated with an associate degree in business management. He worked for Jefferson Energy for 20 years and then Lewis Steel in Wrens for 10 years. He was a Deacon at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, a member of the Lions Club, a member of the Glascock County School Board and a farmer.
Verlon was predeceased by his parents and a sister Wanda Usry. He is survived by his loving wife Shirley Peebles, his daughters Melinda Faye Clark (Anthony) of Gibson and Melissa Kay Frost (Mark) of Mitchell, grandchildren Avery (Megan) Frost of Graniteville, SC and Corey Frost of Mitchell, great grandchildren Bently and Karson Frost of Graniteville, SC, a nephew Brad Usry of Mitchell and a niece Stacie Paul of Wadley.
The family will receive friends Friday evening, June 17, from 6 pm to 8 pm at Taylor Funeral Homes in Gibson.
